I picked up my new bike today, replete with mudguards and pannier rack and took it for a very short ride, just long enough to discover exactly how unfit I am. But never fear, now that I’ve got my wheels I can set about changing all that.

I started my first novel, aged 8, in a draughty vicarage, finishing it 14 years later. My first poem emerged on a Sussex beach in 1965, but I didn’t return to poetry until 2007: I’m still trying to find out why.
I have published short stories, poems and reviews and am a recognised performance poet. I’ve been married 21 years and have two children, Holly, 20 and Daniel, 17; but my husband now wants to be known as female. Looks good. 15 gears? I must get a spare inner tube for mine. I’m paranoid about getting a flat tyre and having to walk back.

Looks heavy and chunky, ideal for some off-road later perhaps?
I am sure you have a good cycle helmet, one thing I always recommend having picked up so many cyclists with head injuries when I was an EMT.
